Through the free radical polymerization of 2-hydroxy-3-cardanylpropyl methacrylate (HCPM) and DMAEMA, a series of copolymers (PSH#s, where # is the molar content (%) of (dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA)) with both nature-based cardanol and zwitterionic moieties Copolymers were betaineated with 1,3-propanesultone after polymerization. Spin coating and UV-crosslinking techniques were used to create transparent PSH# films. The proportions of HCPM and SBMA fractions in the copolymers were found to be closely connected to the bactericidal and antifouling capabilities of the PSH# films.
