Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Mesophase of Carbon Nanotubes and Aramid Polymer for Robust Electrically Conducting Fibers

A monofilament-type of carbon nanotube (CNT) and polyaromatic amide (PA) fibers are developed by using the wet-spinning process of composite solutions showing lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) mesophases. The extremely low compatibility of CNT and PA is successfully overcome assisted by the bottom-up self-assembly approaches, and thus the uniform, continuous, and reliable composite fibers are prepared. The addition of small amount of PA into CNT dope governs the LLC phase not only in the spinneret region but also in the coagulant part. As a result, the CNT and PA composite fibers show outstanding chemical inertness, repeated washability and thermal stability with high mechanical strength (5.0 GPa) and electrical conductivity (8.9 MS/m). The CNT and PA composite fibers can be applied into the robust wiring applications for lightweight bulletproof, turnout gear, and energy transportation.
