Inkjet Printing-based Melanin-like Pigment Fabrication for Photothermal Cell Ablation

Photothermal stimulation has gained attention as a promising technique for various applications such as anticancer therapy, disinfection of medical implants, and tissue engineering. However, the cytotoxicity of currently used photothermal agents, which often leading inflammatory responses, has been a major issue. Melanin is a natural pigment with a broadband absorption range from UV to NIR. Inspired by this, we herein aimed to develop melanin-mimicking pigments as a biocompatible photothermal agent. We found that the melanin-like pigment could be locally synthesized and patterned from the enzyme printed on polymeric membranes by conventional ink-jet printing. The Fabricated pigment showed good biocompatibility in vitro and high photothermal conversion efficiency for cell ablation. We expect that our melanin-like pigment fabrication will provide a versatile tool for various biomedical applications.
