Ionic polymer actuators contain a polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched between two electrodes and have promising potential in soft robotics, wearable electronics, and biomedical devices. However, developing efficient polymer electrolyte remain challenging. Herein, we developed a procedure for preparing an unprecedented ionic block isomer, polystyrene-b-poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PS-b-PSS), synthesized by RAFT polymerization. This isomer significantly improved actuation performance with high displacement of 8.22 mm at 0.5 V and 0.1 Hz, fast rise time of five seconds, and good durability over 14,000 cycles. Therefore, this block isomer could contribute to the progress toward the realization of ionic polymer actuators in the above-mentioned applications and our developed procedure could be used to synthesize polymer electrolytes for related fields like capacitor, battery and fuel cells.
