Synthesis of cyclic olefin polymers with oxanorbornene to control thermal and optical properties.

Cyclic olefin polymers (COP) have great potential as optical materials based on their high transparency, and biocompatibility in addition to excellent thermal- chemical-, and mechanical- resistance. COPs are applied in various fields such as films, displays, cameras, lenses, and medical applications. In this study, we designed a novel series COP based on oxanorbornene monomers. The chemical structures of monomers and polymers were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and the molecular weight of the polymers were calculated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Further, thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). And, optical properties were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy. We anticipate that these studies will contribute to the development of the commercial use of COP.
