Enabling melt or solution-processing of the covalently cross-linked polymer network

Cross-linking is an efficient strategy to enhance the robustness of a linear polymer against harsh thermal, mechanical, and chemical conditions. However, the formation of intermolecular links between polymer chains dramatically reduces the melt or solution processability of the polymers. For instance, the polymerization of multi-functional monomers or post-crosslinking of linear polymers results in the formation of gels or insoluble/infusible solids that cannot be processed into thin films, fibers, or objects with desired shapes. Firstly, organic sol-gel cross-linking polymerization is introduced as a solution-processable method of forming a dense polyurea network in thin films, nanoparticles, porous materials, and nanocomposite materials with various functionality. As a second approach, we introduce a new approach to achieving an ultra-low cross-linking density of the polymer. Very lightly cross-linked polymers are expected to have improved physicochemical properties compared to their linear forms.
