Smart materials, referred to as stimuli-responsive or intelligent materials, are of significant interest in the field of soft robotics, artificial muscles, and wearable or implantable devices for the replacement of traditional machine-based actuators. To expand versatility of smart materials, here we present processing strategies of conducting polymer microfibers, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), for one-dimensional smart actuator applications. By tuning the composition and twisting parameters of the microfibers, both torsional and linear actuation realized in response to external stimuli including humidity. The presented smart fibers can be integrated into many potential electromechanical systems.
