Cellulose, a promising material for sustainable electronics, exhibits humidity-dependent conductivity properties. Therefore, cellulose is an attractive material for eco-friendly humidity sensing devices. However, its low electrical properties require the use of narrow-distance electrodes for higher sensitivity. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of cellulose based humidity sensor is still low compared to that of conventional devices due to the poor output value by a narrow detecting area.
In this letter, we propose a cellulose-based humidity sensor with a large sensing area, i.e. resulting improved sensitivity. The sensor has a wide sensing range and linearity from 10% to 90% relative humidity. It also shows a capacitance value variation of ~1.5 nF with humidity changes, which enable a precise humidity monitoring. This cost-effective and accurate humidity sensor can be expected to serve as a flatform for commercial humidity sensors.
