Materials that can control the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) have been extensively studied for advanced optical applications. Among them, azobenzene-based photoisomerizable materials are considered one of the excellent candidates based on advantages such as fast response, reversibility, remote switching, and selective modulation. In this regard, LC controllable surfaces are prepared using synthesized azobenzene-based functional molecule and surface functionalization techniques. Photoisomerizable molecules chemically attached to surfaces can control the structure and align surrounding LCs in a specific direction, which is detailly investigated through optical and spectroscopic experiments. Applicability to the field of secret encryption and optical smart glasses is proven through the secret pattern indicator manufactured using LC control capability and optics.
