Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)-tunic cellulose nanofibers (TCNF) composite membrane is prepared by impregnating SPEEK solutions into the porous TCNF substrate to reinforce the mechanical durability of the electrolyte membrane for fuel cells. The TCNF substrate is carefully prepared by electrospinning and subsequently crosslinked for the successful fabrication of the SPEEK/TCNF reinforced membrane. The mechanical behaviors of the membrane such as swelling and shrinking by water absorption and drying, respectively, are enhanced with the crosslinked porous TCNF substrate. Moreover, the proton conductivity at low relative humidity conditions is improved due to its hydrophilic properties from the cellulose nanofibers.
