Cyclodextrin (CD) has been investigated as a cosmetic ingredient as an active carrier via molecular encapsulation, such as a solubilizer, defender, stabilizer, odor neutralizer, carrier, and protector against skin irritation. Therefore, quantifying adhesion energies between CD and guest molecule is essential for efficient usage of CD. Herein, we directly measured the interaction energies between CD and adamantane molecule (DAd) using a surface forces apparatus (SFA) by altering the DAd concentration and the CD cavity size (α-, β-, γ-CD). The adhesion energy of β-CD-DAd complex increased drastically with increasing DAd concentration, reaching saturation. As a result, the single-molecular adhesion energy was calculated to be ~9.51 kBT. This analytical system enables the quantification of adhesion energies between CD and various target guest molecules, which can provide valuable information for expanding applications of CD as cosmetic ingredient.
