The thermoplastic insulating materials has become widely used for the eco-friendly power cables. Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) has been widely applied in insulation layer of the HVDC cables, but thermoplastic recently gained interests as an alternative material owing to its superior thermal stability and recyclable property which in turn aid in achieving ‘Net Zero’ sooner. For use in HVDC cables, it is important to optimize the dispersion of nanofillers to minimize space charge accumulation in the insulating material. Homogeneous dispersion and minimised agglomeration of the nanofillers throughout the polymeric interfaces should be achieved when compounded. Thus, surface modification were treated on nanofillers in the same base PP matrix according to different filler loadings. The samples were analysed based on secondary electron microscope images and DC breakdown strength with weibull plots in order to determine optimal condition resulting in the desired properties.
