To understand the excimer formation and fluorescence efficiency of pyrene, an azobenzene-based pyrene derivative was synthesized and investigated its optical properties in dilute solution and self-assembled systems. The involvement of pyrene did not interfere the unique photoisomerizable properties of azobenzene, although the overlap of the absorption spectra of two moieties were recorded. Moreover, the photoisomerization property was not disappeared with high efficiency even in the mixed turbid suspension prepared from tetrahydrofuran (THF)-H2O. The resulting shape of the aggregates in different solvent systems were confirmed with optical microscopy (OM), fluorescence optical microscopy (FOM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurements.
