A research on Polymer Electrolyte of Episulfide Monomer Using Thermosetting

As electrolyte research progresses, polymer electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide (PEO), oligomers, and lithium salts have been of great interest to develop the most modern lithium secondary batteries. We want to make a polymer electrolyte that can be cured at low temperatures and can expect high ion conductivity by using sulfur that can secure the strong attraction with Li ions due to the long curing time and high electronegativity of the previously used epoxy. Here, LiFSI was used as an initiator without a solvent, and structural properties were analyzed using FT-IR and 1H-NMR using an episulfide structure in which oxygen in epoxy was replaced with sulfur. The sulfur-containing rings of the material should have a higher energy level, which facilitates fast curing applications at low temperatures with low energy release. We also show that the improved conductivity of PES over PEO can be attributed to the larger atomic size of sulfur than that of oxygen atoms and the lower competitive strength for lithium ions.
