Preparation of a novel mitochondria-targeted nanoemulsion and its bioactivity against cancer

Mitochondria play a vital role in many cellular process pathways. Therefore, dysfunctional mitochondria are involved in numerous diseases such as cancer. Dominant targeting approaches for therapeutic delivery are detailed in many nanoemulsion studies and show the tremendous potential of targeted delivery to inhibit cancer cell growth. Dequalinium and α-tocopherol succinate are good agents when targeting mitochondria. In here, a mitochondria-targeting emulsion was developed using DQA and α-TOS (DTOS) for the treatment of cancer. The nano DTOS emulsions were formulated using homogenization. DQA and α-TOS were used as surfactants to stabilize the nanoemulsion and anticancer drug. DTOS emulsion can locate the mitochondria and express anticancer effects, similar to DQA emulsion; however, enhanced stability has been demonstrated by DTOS emulsion. Based on these results, DTOS emulsion displayed a high potential for mitochondria targeting and bioactivity against cancer.
