Polypropylene(PP) Composites for Loose Tube with Excellent Impact Strength and Shrinkage included in Optical Fiber Cable

The optical fiber cable is an assembly similar to an electrical cable. The optical fibers are typically coated with polymer and contained in a protective tube(loose tube) suitable for the environment where the cable is used. In the past, polybutylene terephthalate(PBT) with low shrinkage and good mechanical property has been used as a loose tube material, but it is rapidly replaced by polypropylene(PP) due to the hydrolysis and low impact strength of PBT.
In this study, we used PP based composites with smart additives to act as a nucleating agent. Experiments were conducted with different contents of PP composites. All specimens showed excellent mechanical properties as well as thermal stability. In particular, the impact strength was improved by 457% compared to PBT, and the shrinkage was reduced by 26% compared to neat PP, respectively.
Based on the results of this study, PP composites with smart additives are good candidates for loose tubes in terms of improving impact strength and shrinkage.
