Most of the reported mesoporous ZrO2 formed nanopores between particles, not inside particles. To synthesize mesoporous ZrO2 having mesopores inside particles, we designed new synthetic route using tannic acid/formaldehyde resin (TF resin). The hollow mesoporous ZrO2 nanoparticles were synthesized through the solvothermal reaction and calcination process. The zirconium species aggregate together during calcination process and the TF resin is decomposed to produce hollow mesoporous structure. This work demonstrates a solvothermal strategy for design and synthesis of hollow mesoporous zirconia which can be used as additive for polymer/metal oxide nanocomposite. In this study, we first present synthesis of mesoporous zirconia which is very stable oxide material in basic condition.
