A series of biodegradable and sustainable bio-nanocomposites(BNCs) are prepared, and their mechanical properties are examined in this study. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), cellulose nanofiber(CNF), and functional heterocyclic surfactant(HCS) are used as a matrix, a filler, and a dispersing agent, respectively. While CNFs are highly aggregated with each other due to the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding, HCS induces effective exfoliation of aggregated CNFs and excellent dispersion of CNFs in the PBS matrix. The mechanical properties of the prepared BNC(PBS/CNF/HCS) outperform those of pure PBS and a PBS/CNF composite, which is attributed to a unique intermolecular interaction between the PBS matrix and well-dispersed CNFs. A computational simulation and FT-IR spectroscopy are also used to propose a mechanism for improved mechanical properties of BNC in terms of its molecular structure.
