Surfactants are commonly used in many oil-water systems to reduce the interfacial tension; however high concentrations of surfactants can not only alter the composition of the fluids but can also render the contents of the emulsion useless for many applications specially in medicine and biotechnology where purity is of high demand. In this research, we have studied the effect of suspended PNIPAm nanogels on the dynamic interfacial tension of paraffin oil using drop shape analysis and further studied its rheological properties including shear and extensional behaviors. The resulting suspension displayed shear thinning behavior with a significantly reduced interfacial tension. The fluid was then applied in a converging microchannel as a carrier fluid for highly hydrophilic PNIPAm hydrogels for characterization, which cannot pass within the channel in polar fluids without sticking to the channel walls or choking the channel altogether.
