Flow synthesis is an important method for the rapid and reproducible production of conjugated polymers with optimal molecular weight. Increasing the residence time (i.e., the reaction time), initially leads to an increase in molecular weight, but declines are observed at longer residence times. We study this behavior in detail for the conjugated polymer PTB7. Our results support that conjugated polymers undergo mechanochemical chain scission in simple flow systems and that this represents a key side reaction that can influence the molecular weight of conjugated polymers. We also find that reactor temperature, polymer molecular weight, and polymer concentration are important factors that influence the extent of degradation. These results should aid in the optimization of syntheses for conjugated polymer using flow chemistry.
