Cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) is representative example for the display and optical applications due to superior properties such as highly transparent, high thermal stability, and low moisture permeability. Generally, COC can be prepared by vinyl addition polymerization between cyclic olefin monomer and alpha olefin monomer such as ethylene or propylene. In addition, the introduction of functional group in the COC chains has limited because of catalytic tolerance for the polar functional groups and was mostly limited to functionalization of cyclic monomers. Herein, we present the cyclic olefin copolymer carrying polar functional group at alpha olefin position using palladium(Ⅱ) catalyst system, which provides COC having gradient sequence between norbornene and functional alpha olefin. The structural analysis of obtained COCs were performed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR and SEC. Moreover, the thermal properties of obtained COCs were confirmed by TGA and DSC.
