High-Performance and Mechanically Robust Organic Solar Cells with 19.1% Efficiency Enabled by Sequential Polymerization

Enhancing stretchability of active layer is utmost important to realize flexible organic solar cells. However, there is a hurdle to overcome trade-off between mechanical properties and electrical properties for high performance organic solar cells (OSCs). Conventional random copolymerization or ternary blend of active layer materials has been utilized in OSCs which has a threshold to maximize mechanical and electrical properties simultaneously. Herein, we designed a high open-circuit voltage(Voc) polymer donor D180.8-s-PEHDT0.2 by sequentially polymerizing D18 and PEHDT 8:2 molar ratio. Sequential polymer donor in D180.8-s-PEHDT0.2:L8-BO blend enabled to reach a much higher PCE of 19.1% and crack on set(COS) of 17.1% compared to reference D18:L8BO blend. Importantly, we investigated novel approach to extract maximum potential of each component to be successfully applied to wearable devices.
