Stationary liquids as a hydrogel marble for efficient gas absorption

Hydrogel beads gas column proposed efficient gas absorption by enlarging gas/liquid interfacial area. However, hydrogel beads cannot fully utilize the contact area due to the liquid layer formed above the hydrogel which tends to form liquid bridges that fill the voids between the hydrogel beads in column. Liquid marble, that is liquid droplet covered by hydrophobic solid particles, stabilize droplet to behave like individual solid material. Herein, we design spherical solvent infused hydrogel marble (SIHM) as a novel gas absorption approach. Hydrophobic particles on the surface prevent the formation of liquid layer over hydrogel, then each hydrogel marble acts as individual gas absorbent to maximize surface area. With high compatibility of SIHM, it can be customized with various solvents for each target gas. In addition, the use of non-volatile solvent such as ionic liquid can reduce solvent loss during desorption process, making the SIHM a promising long-term gas absorption approach.
