Fibriform Organic Electrochemical Diodes for Logical Operation and Transient Voltage Suppression Functions of Wearable E-textile Integrated Circuits

As interest in e-textiles as an ideal platform for wearable devices increases, recent efforts to implement fibriform devices are advancing the realization of multi-functional e-textile products with in-textile-embedded circuit systems. However, functional fibriform diodes that are capable of performing rectifying, complementary logic and device protection functions are not attempted so far. In this work, a textile-embeddable, washable, fibriform organic electrochemical diode based on a twist assembly of metal/polymer semiconductor/iongel coaxial microfiber will be introduced. The electrochemical reactions of polymer semiconductors enabled N- or P-type diode behaviors showing the asymmetrical current flow with a rectification ratio of 102. A full-wave rectifiers and logic gate circuits were accomplished by weaving-integration of them into E-textile. Furthermore, rapid transient voltage suppressing functionality successfully protected a low-voltage operational electrocardiogram monitoring system against daily-life electrostatics.
