The separator serves to physically separate the cathode and the anode in the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and plays a key role in the thermal stability performance of the LIBs. In general, a polyethylene (PE) is commonly used for a separator because processing costs are relatively low and mechanical properties are excellent. However, PE shrinks and melts at high temperatures, causing safety problems. Thus, previous studies sought to solve this problem by coating the separator with ceramics with excellent thermal characteristics. In this work, polystyrene with excellent thermal properties was coated on ceramic using emulsion polymerization to form a core-shell structure, and it was coated on the PE separator. Thermal characteristics of the conventional PE separator, ceramic-coated PE separator, and styrene-ceramic coated PE separator were analyzed and compared.
