Nano newton (nN) scale low dust adhesion on conventional solid filters has been a challenging and unsolved issue to improve filtering performances. Nasal hairs covered with mucus protect our organs by filtering external particulate pollutants, such as dust. Effective filtering is occurred by the nasal hair via a strong liquid-solid adhesion between mucus layer and pollutants. We design biomimetic adhesion enhanced filters of nasal hair with mucus using stable liquid thin films. This research shows dust adhesions on liquid thin films in the range of micro newton by capillary force. This strong dust adhesion results in outstanding filtering performances; enhanced filtering efficiency while keeping air permeability, ultra-fast filtering, and multi-directional filtration. Even though the filter captures more dust, the liquid layer contributes to densely compressing the collected dusts, which allows longer pore opening and filter lifetime. The liquid thin film coated filter presents a new and apparent way to innovate air purifying systems.
