Photoactivation of organic UV filters not only deteriorates the sunscreen products but also causes biological damage by toxic photodegradation products and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Synthetic polymers have been widely investigated for organic UV filter encapsulation, but recently regulations of synthetic polymers for using cosmetic and personal care products were drastically increased. Herein, we introduce a plastic-free encapsulation platform for organic UV filters based on chitosan-coated mesoporous silica particles with octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC). The chitosan-silica-OMC particles in artificial sweat showed only 20% of OMC degradation under 3 hours of simulated sunlight irradiation, while free OMC degrade 80% in an hour. Moreover, photo-induced ROS generation of OMC was suppressed about 99% by the chitosan-silica hybrid structure. The encapsulation of organic UV filters by biopolymer-mesoporous metal oxide hybrid particles could provide a new environmentally friendly route to improve the stability and safety of sunscreen products.
