Ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is well-known to synthesize well-defined polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Herein, we investigated the potential of ROMP-based polymers for silicon (Si) anode binders to alleviate the volume expansion during charge and discharge. A carboxylic acid-functionalized polynorbornene (CA-PNB) was synthesized by a two-step process including ROMP of t-butyl functionalized norbornene using third-generation Grubbs catalyst followed by deprotection of the t-butyl moiety. Interestingly, the Si anode prepared using CA-PNB binder exhibited higher specific capacity and better cycling stability compared to conventional PVDF and CMC binders. The superior performance of Si-CA-PNB anode was attributed to the abundant -COOH groups in the binder that assures strong interactions with the Si surface.
