Efficient LBL Ternary Organic Solar Cells through Morphology Control with Donor-Selective Additive

Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure are dominant in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs). Besides, additives are an effective means for morphological control, but precise morphological control is difficult due to the randomly distributed materials in the BHJ structure. Moreover, the selection of additives depends on the acceptor materials, not on the donor materials. In this study, we introduce a layer-by-layer (LBL) ternary OSC that can easily control the morphology through a LBL spin coating process through suitable additives for donor and acceptor materials, and furthermore, optimizes the ratio of the acceptors. The miscibility between materials and the effect of additive engineering is observed through atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, and the crystallization of the film are investigated through grazing incidence wide angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS). In addition, nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (ns-TAS) are performed to investigate charge carrier dynamics.
