Fabrication of highly hydrophobic transparent UV cured coatings with a thiol terminated perfluorinated hyperbranched polysiloxane and polyurethane acrylate

This study demonstrated that highly hydrophobic (with water contact angle of 130o) transparent UV cured coatings could be fabricated by using small amounts (less than 10 phr) of thiol terminated perfluorinated hyperbranched polysiloxane (PF-HBPSi-SH) as a reactive additive to UV curable urethane acrylate. The PF-HBPSi-SH with varying contents of PF moiety were successfully synthesized from (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane and neopentyl glycol under solvent-free and catalyst–free conditions, and subsequent modification of the HBPSi-SH with perfluoro acrylate via thiol-acrylate addition reaction. Both surface enrichment of PF-HBPSi-SH and formation of nanoscaled surface roughness of UV cured coatings could by observed by angle-resolved XPS and AFM, respectively, which endowed the coating materials high water contact angle without sacrificing the optical transparency. Formation of the nanoscaled surface roughness was thought to arise from differences in cure rate between the surface layer (thiol-acrylate addition reaction) and bulk layer (radical reaction of acrylate).
