Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is widely used in the fabrication of biomedical device. However, bacterial growth on the surface of polymer reduces the lifespan and function of these devices. To solve this problem, we synthesized pyridinium group grafted-PVDF (Pyd-PVDF) and prepared antibacterial PVDF-based blends by melt-blending Pyd-PVDF and PVDF using a twin screw extruder. The structural, thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of the prepared blends were measured. The Izod impact strengths and elongations of blends increased as the content of Pyd-PVDF increased. Conversely, the flexural moduli and tensile strengths of blends decreased slightly as the content of Pyd-PVDF decreased. These results are attributed to the lower crystallinity and the higher intermolecular interaction between PVDF and Pyd-PVDF as the content of Pyd-PVDF increased. Also, the blends with ≥5 wt% of Pyd-PVDF showed excellent antibacterial properties of 99.99% against E. coli growth.
