A study on controlling cure cycle for improving heat distortion temperature of epoxy resin

As marine leisure received attention, yacht design has become diverse, and the mold had become important. In yacht fabrication, a mold is required for shapes, and recently, glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) is used. However, because GFRP usage have possibility of polymer shrinkage that ruins dimensional stability, it is important to prevent earlier.
In this study, we controlled cure cycle of epoxy resin to improve its heat distortion temperature (HDT). Cure temperature was selected and additional post cure stage was also considered. The HDT of epoxy resin systems cured with specified cure cycle was measured. Despite the HDT is a useful factor to predict polymer shrinkage, needs for dedicated equipment and complex method make it underutilized. To replace the method, we used dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) to checked temperature of storage modulus reaching 1 GPa. DMA results showed that curing temperature and additional post cure stages were revealed to be the factor of HDT improvement, and verified a degree of cure and a crystallinity of the polymer are related to the HDT.
