Biofouling of implantable medical devices causes various bacterial infections and degrades the function of the devices. Among antifouling materials, the zwitterionic hydrogel has been widely studied as a coating material for antifouling and anti-thrombosis. However, there remain a few challenges to solve in immobilizing hydrogels on various substrates and improving the stability of the hydrogel layer. Herein, we developed a facile and universal zwitterionic hydrogel coating method using visible light. Briefly, the hydrogel layer composed of the representative zwitterionic polymer, poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA), is introduced to the surface via photo-crosslinking so that any surface can be uniformly coated regardless of the surface structures. Based on these advantages of zwitterionic polymers, we validated the excellent antifouling effects of the fabricated surfaces and their applicability to various substrates.
