MRI-compatible and ECoG-ready injectable hydrogel electrode array

Hydrogel-based implantable electrode arrays have their advantages in implantable devices due to their ability to conformally interface with target biological tissues with matching mechanical modulus in addition to high volumetric capacitance. Herein, we have developed an injectable conductive hydrogel (HTPP) composed of tyramine-conjugated hyaluronic acid (HATYR) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). This multi-channel hydrogel electrode array is encapsulated within stretchable, flexible, and self-healable insulating layers that can be conformally adhered to soft tissues without causing cytotoxicity. As a result, each of the hydrogel channels sensed specific electrocorticogram (ECoG) signals of a rat when introduced to light stimulation. In addition, the implanted device was imaged in T2-weighed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and showed no artifacts. Conclusively, we have observed that our developed bioelectronic implantable device is capable of in situ imaging MRI while recording ECoG signals for a potential in next generation electrode array.
