The biodegradable polymers have been researched and developed rapidly in recent years due plastic wastes and pollution. Out of which, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) are representative biodegradable polymers. To improve mechanical and thermal properties of PLA or PBAT, fabrication of blends has been studied. However, PLA/PBAT blends show multiphase behavior and poor mechanical properties due to the difference solubility parameters of each component. Herein, we confirmed that the localization of modified silica in the PLA/PBAT nanocomposite could be determined by controlling the PBAT mixing time, PLA/PBAT-based nanocomposites with selective localized nano-filler are synthesized via melt blending technique. Consequently, the PLA/PBAT-based nanocomposites exhibit significantly improved mechanical property compared with PLA/PBAT blends, moreover, demonstrate a new approach to control the dispersion of immiscible polymer blends.
