The PPFS/Sulfur-rich Polymer Blend Using Phase Separation Strategy for the Synthesis of eco-Friendly Negative Triboelectric Materials

Recently, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have received attention as a power source for small electronic devices such as IoT sensor. A promising material for TENGs is sulfur-rich polymer (SRP), synthesized through inverse vulcanization, with high electron affinity A previous study utilizing direct surface fluorination on SRPs demonstrated improved TENG performance compared to conventional materials, but faced environmental challenges due to using toxic gases. In this study, we developed an eco-friendly method of synthesizing highly negative triboelectric blends by mixing fluorine-rich poly(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) (PPFS) with SRPs, and then hot pressing to form a film. The heat caused PPFS to migrate to the air interface, inducing phase separation, leading to 8- and 9-fold increases in voltage and current output, respectively, compared to TENGs using conventional materials. The use of SRPs with a phase separation strategy as a negative triboelectric material in TENGs has the potential to improve TENG performance and promote sustainability.
