Fabrication and Characterization of PLA/PBAT Blends for Biodegradable Hygiene Products

Recently, the issue of environmental pollution due to non-degradable plastics has been gradually increasing. There have been need to replace PS (polystyrene), PP (polypropylene), and Nylon used in disposable hygiene products (disposable flosser, toothbrush, razor, etc.) with eco-friendly materials. We prepared blends of PLA, with high modulus, and PBAT, with high elongation, that can be applied to various hygiene products. To improve problems that occur during the blending of the two polymers, we increased the compatibility using an epoxy-based compatibilizer. The prepared PLA/PBAT blends were characterized through rheological, mechanical (tensile and flexural properties), thermal and morphological properties. As a result, we successfully prepared biodegradable blends that can be applied to various hygiene products by adjusting the PLA/PBAT ratio.
