Designing Photonic Microcapsules with Primary and Secondary Structural Colors

Photonic microspheres containing 3D colloidal arrays are promising as pigment-free structural colorants in cosmetics and coatings. However, color saturation is somewhat limited due to weak structural resonance. Here, we design elastic photonic microcapsules through depletion-induced crystallization of colloidal particles to develop effective structural colorants. The microcapsules are templated by water-in-oil-in-water double-emulsion drops, where water core contains polystyrene particles and oil shell is polydimethylsiloxane prepolymer. The monodisperse polystyrene particles are spontaneously assembled into single-crystalline HCP lattices by depletion attraction, strengthening structural resonance. One of the pronounced primary RGB colors is developed depending on particle size. Interestingly, when two different particles are simultaneously employed, they assemble into their own crystalline grains, which develops secondary colors through color mixing.
