Soft dry electrodes that are eco-friendly, and self-adhesive are promising candidates for long-term electrophysiological signal monitoring such as electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), and electrocardiography (ECG). In particular, to achieve a dry characteristic for a long-term measurement, a surfactant-assisted polymer blend based on the conductive polymer and elastomer is widely employed due to the facile preparation. However, Triton X-100 has been used as a surfactant for blended systems which could potentially affect environmental problems as well as human health issues. Here, we report soft bilayer dry electrodes composed of a self-adhesive layer and a conductive layer composed of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and eco-friendly surfactants. The developed electrodes exhibit reliable electrical characteristics under various mechanical deformations and conformal contact to human body surface with good adhesion even for the long term, which enables reliable electrophysiological signal monitoring from the human body.
