Polymerization of Styrene-Vinylpyridine Copolymers to Improve Thermal Stability of Lithium Ion Battery Separators through Emulsion Polymerization

Separators are important for the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries because they can prevent internal short circuits by separating the cathode and the anode. Commercially available polyolefine separators suffer from heat shrinkage. In this work, copolymers based on styrene and vinylpyridine were designed as an additional coating layer on the separator to imporve the thermal stability. The copolymers were prepared through emulsion polymerization which is an eco-friendly method without using any organic solvents. The thermal properties according to the proportion of monomers were analyzed. In addition, thermal properties according to crosslinking were also analyzed using divinylbenzene.
