Synthesis and Structure-Property Relationship of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(ester amide)s with Combined Aromatic-Aliphatic Segmental Units

Thermotropic liquid crystal polyesters (TLCPs) are high-performance polymers with outstanding thermal stability, mechanical properties, and chemical resistance. Despite these advantages, high orientation, and easy fibrillization of TLCPs make them difficult in fabricating into films in melt-processing. To overcome the drawbacks of typical TLCPs, in this study, we have synthesized a series of thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(ester amide)s (TLCPEAs) with different compositions of aromatic-aliphatic segmental units via melt-polycondensation reactions of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA), ε-caprolactam (CL), and butyrolactam (BL) monomers. The liquid crystalline, fibrillar and molecular structures of TLCPEAs were characterized using POM, SEM, and FT-IR analyses. The thermal transition, thermal stability, mechanical property, rheological behavior, and dielectric property of TLCPEAs were investigated using DSC, TGA, DMA, rotational rheometry, respectively.
