Soft Artificial Fingertip Electronics for Multimodal Sensing

The tactile sensations from external stimuli are perceived mainly by sensing pressure and temperature. With growing interest in artificial sensing systems for electronic skins (E-skins), prosthetics, and soft robots developing wearable sensors in a fully soft (stretchable, bendable) format with multiple functionalities become a critical challenge for advanced practical applications to overcome the mechanical mismatch between traditional rigid electronics and soft human bodies. Additionally, diverse stimuli (e.g., heat and pressure) induce significant artifacts to the signal of the specific sensor incorporated in a single platform, which can not provide accurate recognition. Here, we report the fully soft artificial fingertip electronics enabling multimodal sensing systems of pressure and temperature, which consisted of only soft materials. Furthermore, the artificial fingertip is integrated with a temperature-insensitive pressure sensor and pressure-insensitive temperature sensor, which enable independent sensing in real-time under simultaneous stimuli of temperature and pressure. The fully soft artificial fingertip capable of multimodal sensing systems could contribute to advanced future electronics in various emerging fields such as E-skins, healthcare devices, soft robotics, and other practical applications.
