Due to the widespread use of electronic devices, interest in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding has increased over recent decades. Thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters (TLCPs) are widely used as super engineering polymers in various industrial applications. Since most polymers including TLCPs have low electrical conductivity, it is necessary to improve their electrical conductivity for EMI shielding performance. Since electroless plating is a chemical reduction process, the obtained metallic coating on polymeric materials endows uniform electrical properties. In this study, TLCP-based nonwovens with high EMI shielding performance and flexibility were fabricated via electroless nickel plating and wet-laid process. The microstructure and morphology of nickel-plated TLCP nonwovens were characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS, and XRD. The electrical conductivity and EMI shielding performance of the nonwovens were measured using an electrometer and a network analyzer, respectively.
