Recyclable Bio-based Vitrimer for Digital Light Processing 4D Printing

Digital light processing (DLP) is currently one of the most popular 3D printing techniques and it has the advantages of high resolution and rapid processing. However, typical thermoset products from DLP-based printing cannot be reprocessed due to a permanent network, and they also have petrochemical-based toxicity, which results in significant environmental issues (plastic pollution). In this situation, the research of vitrimer with dynamic covalent networks, and the development of sustainable bio-based resin offer a new solution to the problem of plastic pollution. Here, we prepared bio-based UV-curable vitrimer resin using hybrid acrylate-epoxy from soybean oil. The printed objects with optimized hybrid resin exhibit special welding and shape memory properties. This study suggests a novel approach to sustainable 3D printing materials, which could be applied to various manufacturing industries that require mass production of customized products as well as resolving long-standing environmental problems of DLP 3D printing materials.
