Water pollution is considered a severe environmental problem. Synthetic dyes, heavy metals, and other toxic and non-degradable substances are the main contributors to water pollution. In particular, as more than 700,000 tons of synthetic dyes are produced annually and discarded through industrial wastewater, they must be removed from the water for purification. Adsorption is an efficient method of separating contaminants from water at a relatively low cost. In this study, a nanocellulose-based stimuli responsive hydrogel was prepared for the efficient removal of ionic dye contaminants. The hydrogel was prepared by crosslinking anionic carboxymethyl cellulose nanofbrils and cationic quaternary cellulose nanofbrils. As the prepared hydrogel showed reversible swelling and shrinkage with different pH conditions by surface charge effect, it had effective removal capability to both anionic and cationic dyes under proper pH conditions. The dye adsorption behavior of the hydrogel was evaluated through adsorption isotherm and kinetic model studies.
