In this study, a super-hydrophobic Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous membrane was fabricated to separate oil substances from water. First, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was used as a reinforcing agent of the PVA matrix. Next, electrospinning was performed to produce the nanofibrous membrane. Thereafter, the prepared PVA/CNC membrane was subjected to chemical vapor deposition (CVD) treatment to have super-hydrophobicity on the nanofiber surface. As a result, the prepared PVA/CNC nanofibrous membrane exhibited super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle above 150 degrees. Due to its super-hydrophobicity, the PVA/CNC nanofibrous membrane showed excellent oil adsorption and oil-water separation performance and maintained stable performance even after being reused 5 times. In addition, Separation experiments using oil in water emulsion also showed a separation efficiency of over 99%. Considering the above results, the PVA/CNC nanofiber membrane can be sufficiently used as an oil adsorption material.
