Mechanically Anisotropic Stretchable and Transparent Composite Substrates for Distortion-Free Display

Flexible and stretchable displays have been a topic of interest for many years due to their potential for use in various applications, such as wearable devices, the internet of things, and robotics. However, unlike conventional rigid displays, stretchable displays have a problem because the screen is distorted using an elastomer substrate. To solve this problem, we were inspired by the mechanical anisotropy of unidirectionally oriented fiber composite substrates. We incorporated aligned ribbon arrays in stretchable and transparent substrates to reduce screen distortion when stretching in one direction. The composite stretchable substrate has increased rigidity in the aligned direction and matrix rigidity in a direction perpendicular to the aligned direction, thereby imparting mechanical anisotropy to reduce Poisson's ratio and screen distortion. Our ribbon-aligned substrate exhibited a Poisson's ratio of less than 0.1, demonstrating a 4x4 LED array on the substrate with no distortion up to 50% stretching.
