Even though increasing research has brought up the microplastics' toxicity against the human body, the potential toxicity of nano plastic, naturally fragmented by weathering, has not been clearly investigated. However, microplastic can be fragmented into nano plastic degraded by external physical and biological stresses in the ocean. Here, manufactured polyethylene plastic particle was focused on ultrasound to imitate naturally fragmented nano plastic particles by weathering. In addition, the potential threat of fragmented nano plastic particles on the human body was studied through immune cytokine analysis, cytotoxicity test, and co-culture with human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The energy generated via ultrasonic irradiation mimicked physical stresses and oxidation reactions by UV irradiation in the natural environment. We analyzed the morphological and functional group change on the surface of particles between manufactured plastic and fragmented nano plastics. This study implemented naturally transformed nano plastic by weathering and evaluated potential toxicity.
