Effects of lignocellulosic components addition on physicochemical properties of starch-based biocomposites

Recently, as a solution to the depletion of petroleum resources and environmental pollution caused by non-degradable plastics, natural biodegradable plastics are emerging as an alternative. In this study, a bio-based and biodegradable plastic was prepared using starch as a matrix and lignocellulosic biomass such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose as additives. The effect of lignocellulosic components addition on the physicochemical properties of starch-based composites was confirmed through UTM and SEM. In addition, chemical structural changes were analyzed through IR, and thermal behavior was measured through TGA. Hygroscopic properties were observed through water permeability. In summary, the addition of lignin contributed to the improvement of the thermal properties of the starch matrix, and the cellulose additive could improve the mechanical properties due to hydrogen bonding between cellulose and starch. On the other hand, in the case of hemicellulose, due to its high hydrophilicity, the water stability of the prepared starch-based composite material was impaired.
