Polymeric hydrogels have attracted substantial attention as promising matrices for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to their controllable properties and structural similarity to the natural extracellular matrices. An emerging paradigm in designing advanced hydrogels is to create bioactive matrices inducing in situ tissue regeneration via host tissue stimulation by physicochemical cues of the hydrogel materials. This presentation discusses how the hydrogels are designed to create bioactive matrices that can recapitulate or stimulate native tissues to facilitate endogenous tissue regeneration. Specifically, we focus on introducing bioactive hydrogels releasing molecular oxygen or zinc ions for enhanced wound healing and tissue regeneration.
